New Delhi, Sept 15 (LAB) The Bar Council of India (BCI) has proposed to increase the superannuation age of Supreme Court judges as well as in different High Courts across the country.
According to a statement issued by the Council, a joint meeting of all State Bar Councils, office-bearers of High Court Bar Associations and Bar Council of India held last week discussed the issue with regard to enhancement of the age of superannuation of Judges of High Courts and Supreme Court.
The meeting observed that there should be an immediate amendment in the Constitution and the retirement age of Judges of High Courts should be enhanced from 62 to 65 years and the age of superannuation of Judges of the Supreme Court should be enhanced to 67 years.
The meeting further proposed amendments to various Statutes of Parliament, so that even the experienced Advocates could be appointed as Chairpersons of various commissions and other Forums.
The resolution passed in the Joint Meeting was deemed to be approved by the Council, which was also part of the Joint Meeting, said the statement.
A copy of the resolution will be sent to the Prime Minister and the Union Minister for Law and Justice for immediate action. /LAB/SNG/
