NHRC directs owner to pay Rs. 10 lakh each as compensation to the next of kin of two labourers who died in Koderma mine accident

New Delhi Sept 20 (LAB) The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, directed a mine owner to pay Rs. 10 lakh each as compensation to the next of kin of the two labourers who died in a stone mine accident in Koderma, Jharkhand. The incident happened in 2019, in which one of the co-owners of the mine also died.

On the intervention of NHRC the mine owner on October 26, 2021, paid Rs. 10,00,000 each to the NoK of the two deceased labourers, even as the court proceedings in the matter are pending.

The Commission registered a case on the basis of a complaint received on September 16, 2020, alleging that a rescue operation was taken up only after five hours of the incident to look out for the trapped labourers and the others, who were trapped.

The Commission sent a notice to the District Magistrate, Koderma on November 13, 2020, and asked it to file its report into the incident.

In response to the notices of the Commission, the Deputy. Commissioner, Koderna informed that a case under various sections of the IPC had been registered on November 10, 2019, against the mine owner for his negligence. After investigations, a Charge sheet was filed in court on July 30, 2020./

The Mine owner complied with the NHRC directions and owing to its responsibility paid the compensation to the next of kin of the two laborourers who died in the accident. LAB/SNG/
